About

Academic foundations.
Practical instincts.

I work where business education, entrepreneurship and new ideas meet. My starting point is usually a simple question: how can this be useful in practice?

Professional biography

MD Asif Hossain is a business educator, researcher and entrepreneur based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management at North South University, where his teaching connects management theory with the decisions people face in organisations and new ventures.

He holds an MSc in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship from the University of Manchester and a BSc in Management and Marketing from Newcastle University. His entrepreneurial background includes founding PrintworksBD, an online bookstore, and co-founding LightBox Events in the UK.

At NSU, his teaching spans entrepreneurship, organisational management, strategic management and related business subjects. He uses cases, student pitches, classroom experiments and interactive learning labs to encourage students to examine assumptions and develop their own judgement.

His research interests include university-based entrepreneurial ecosystems, sustainable entrepreneurship and digital business models. He has led university-funded research projects, co-authored SAGE Business Cases and received a Best Paper Award in the innovation segment at IBA’s Vision 2041 conference.

Asif is developing a wider platform for professional learning, with an interest in personal branding, sales, practical AI use and strategic thinking. The direction builds on a consistent principle: useful education should help people apply ideas to their own work. He welcomes conversations about teaching, research, entrepreneurship programmes and thoughtfully designed workshops.

The story behind the work

My route into business education connects two places: the UK, where I studied management, marketing and entrepreneurship, and Bangladesh, where I have built businesses and teach.

At Newcastle University, I studied management and marketing. My subsequent master’s at the University of Manchester focused on innovation management and entrepreneurship. For my 2016 dissertation, I explored how 3D printing might affect product supply chains. That question sits close to an interest I still have: how does a new technology move from an exciting idea to something that changes everyday business?

I have also experienced enterprise from the inside. I co-founded LightBox Events in the UK and later founded PrintworksBD, an online bookstore in Bangladesh. These experiences give me a practical reference point when I ask students to consider customers, business models and the trade-offs behind an idea.

I joined North South University in 2018 and became a Senior Lecturer in 2024. Teaching has given me room to keep experimenting. Students pitch businesses, draw business plans without words, analyse companies and work through interactive strategy labs. I want them to leave with the ability to make and explain a decision.

Research offers another way to work on those questions. My projects examine university support for entrepreneurship and the development of cloud kitchens. Teaching cases connect business stories with structured discussion; public writing brings questions about technology and responsibility to a wider audience.

The next step is to take more of this practical learning beyond the university classroom. I am developing professional workshops around personal branding, sales, AI and business thinking. I want those sessions to retain what makes a good class useful: a relevant problem, a thoughtful conversation and an opportunity to apply what you have learned.
